Husks and Shards

I spent the day dyeing corn husks for the doll class.  Aren't they pretty?  I can't wait to show the little girls!

My mom and daughter and I went to a doll show last weekend.   I bought a bunch of broken doll heads.  I was thinking of making little doll ornaments for a Christmas tree.  If I start now, I'll have a bunch by the end of the year.  I want to fix the Helen doll.  Her pieces were glued together with some old, weird glue.  It was definitely an old fix.  I need to figure out how to get the remaining glue off of the pieces.  Then I need to find out what kind of glue to use to piece her back together.  She came on a cloth body that looks original.  I'm looking forward to giving her new life.

  1. Wow, I can't wait to see what you do with the Helen doll. How do you dye corn husks and how do you use them for doll making?

  2. You can make press molds of these little doll heads by pressing them into Sculpey - one mold for front and one mold for back and baking the Sculpey so it hardens. Then carefully apply a mold release and press paperclay in the mold until it dries.

I did it once with a frozen Charlotte I owned (and then sold and wish I hadn't). Luck you for going to a doll show! :-)

  3. Oooo! Dixie, that's a grand idea. I don't even know what a mold release is...

    Courtney - Ditto!

Lizzie - We're going to make corn husk dolls with the husks. There are lots of good tutorials on the internet for making them - it involves soaking the husks and then tying them and layering them to make limbs, a head, etc. If you have any kids in your life, I highly recommend this project. We're going to use the dyed husks for the dresses.
