I adapted Dixie's IW pattern to make a toddler.  He's wearing a skeleton suit, popular during the early 1800's for small boys.  His body covering is from ABC fabric.  Old China head dolls were sometimes covered in fabric with letters or numbers.

Her head is painted.

After sculpting her, I glued on a layer of cotton stockinette fabric to give some texture.  Then I painted her with acrylic paints, then a couple of layers of varnish, then some antiquing stain.

Doll Making Process

A friend asked me about the doll making process, so I decided to post some photos of my current doll.  First, I sew a head and torso unit and stuff that.  Then I sculpt a basic head over the fabric, using paper clay.  Then comes lots of sanding, refining, adding and subtracting of paper clay until I'm satisfied or until I'm sick and tired of looking at it.  Sometimes I glue a layer of fabric to the head, to give it a cloth texture.  Sometimes I don't.
